About the Property
A private pastoral property with open views of a serene rural landscape inspired our modern interpretation of a farmhouse. We embraced the area’s rich agrarian history and beautiful pastures to create a simple yet sophisticated custom residence for a growing family. We oriented the house to capture views and incorporate passive solar seasonal benefits via big windows and wrap covered porches.
The Main Entry welcomes you into a bright airy entryway open to a Living space that beckons to the outdoors with French doors opening to covered porches wrapping all three sides. The living room’s three exposures give long picturesque views over sun filled meadows and outdoor spaces to hang out on rainy days. Perfect for entertaining or sitting quietly, the Entry and Living spaces flow to a large formal Dining Room.
On axis with the sun’s path and to woodlands to the west, a fireplace draws attention toward a barn inspired Great Room space that is open to the kitchen and another covered porch overlooking the lush landscape. Corner windows give a sense of openness to enjoy any season in a private sanctuary. Snow covered landscapes in winter, and blossoming fruit trees spring and summer let you connect with the bucolic setting. There is an inherent peacefulness in this house that is a recurring theme in all my architectural projects
A wide modern wood and steel stair with stainless cable railings inspired by adjacent pasture fencing gives dramatic focus to the Entry way. Large windows and ample natural light give joyful form to the simple act of using the stairs in this four floor home.
Upstairs, themes of ample light, big views and spatial flow continue with a library loft overlooking the Great Room and a bridge connecting the Second Floor to an Art Studio over the Garage. A private Primary Bedroom suite is separate from other second floor spaces with light from three sides.
We enlivened the basement rec room space with a Fireplace, glass block windows giving diffused natural light and vivid linoleum flooring. We were honored to have this commission as our first built residence in 1990. It’s gratifying to see how well the design has held up over time and possibly inspired others to look afresh at American Farmhouse vernacular architecture’s simple strength.
